Walter L. Stonehocker Excellence in Training Award 

Who is Walter L. Stonehocker ?

  • Walter Stonehocker became a charter member of West Adams County Volunteer Fire Department (North Metro) in 1945 and helped build the Eastlake firehouse.
  • He continued to serve as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years, during which he served as Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief of the Fire District.
  • In 1968 he was elected to the Board of Directors and served four consecutive terms, of which, six years he served as president.
  • For two years he also served as the Law and Legislative Chairman of the Colorado State Fireman's (Firefighters) Association.
  • Walter was a farmer in Brighton and a founding member of Western Gas Resources
  • Walt passed away February 25, 2018 at the age of 93
This Scholarship Award will recognize two individual Colorado training officers  that have made a substantial contribution to the betterment of their local fire agency and their communities.

 Nominations are open to all active fire department personnel but preference will be given to volunteer and combination department applications.  


The two scholarships include conference registration, travel, per diem and lodging through the Stonehocker Family. The FDIC Conference registration will include pre conference courses. 
The FDIC Conference is in held in Indianapolis, IN April 7th - 12th, 2025. 

Award winners will be announced at the CFTOA meeting in February.
